ROCKY POINT, N.Y. — Authorities are investigating after a shopper allegedly discovered what appeared to be a hidden recording device inside a department store fitting room Friday afternoon.

According to reports Kerry Roberts, a local shopper, noticed a small electronic device concealed behind a ventilation grille while trying on clothing. Roberts immediately left the fitting room and notified store management, who contacted local police.

Officers responded to the scene, secured the area, and collected the device as evidence. Detectives are working to determine how long it may have been in place, whether it was operational, and if any images or video were recorded.

Store management temporarily closed the fitting rooms while conducting a thorough inspection of the area and stated that customer privacy and safety remain their highest priorities. Employees are cooperating fully with investigators and reviewing store security procedures.

A police spokesperson said investigators are encouraging anyone who may have recently used the fitting rooms and noticed suspicious activity to come forward.

“We take allegations involving privacy violations extremely seriously,” the spokesperson said. “At this stage, the investigation remains active, and no arrests have been made.”

Privacy experts note that incidents involving hidden recording devices in changing rooms are uncommon but recommend that shoppers remain alert for anything that appears unusual or out of place and report concerns immediately to store staff or law enforcement.
